Project: Renewable Energy for Drip Irrigation of horticultural Crops PDF Print

Mradi wa kilimo cha umwagiliajiThe Sustainable Energy Services, Environment Management and Development Organisation (SESEDO) is trying to tackle the serious situation concerning persistent drought and unsustainable farming systems along the south eastern shores of Lake Victoria.

The focus of the project is the application of renewable energy for irrigation purposes to replace the current fuel water pumps so as to save water, fuel and CO2 emissions in conjunction with the introduction of efficient irrigation methods for increased farmers' production.

Solar and windmill water pumps are installed to pump water to three demonstration farms. The installation of water pumping systems is accompanied by thorough training for community members.

A Revolving Fund System will be established to enable poor farmers to get access to Low-cost Drip Irrigation Systems that are operated by treadle pumps on leasing basis. For the sustainability of the project there is a fee concept for the services rendered to the community members by the project, that is a reasonable amount of money from their earnings to cover the costs for maintenance and operation, spare parts, reinvestments and other unforeseen repairs. This is aimed to assure the project an economic durability, sustainability and replication capability.
